Go Up Go Down

I am new to prospecting and very hooked. I have gone to a few places so far but turned up nothing but hematite sand. All I have right now is an AU pan and a screen classifier. I'm going to get a metal detector later this week. Will this help me in a streambed at all? Also I would like to build my own sluice and 2.5 inch gas powered dredge mounted on a backpack. Does any one have plans for these? If any one has spots for AU prospecting in Oregon or Washington that they are willing to share I would greatly appreciate them. Thanks again everyone!

Where are you located at in Oregon? Did you join a THer club there yet? I lived in La Pine OR thats located 30 miles south of Bend. I also belong to the High Desert Treasure Hunting Club in Bend. Please do your self a favor and join a club so you can get the Do and donts so ya dont get into trouble. One of my favorite places to go was by Baker in the N.E. part of the state. John day, Susanville area. The S.W. part of the state can get a little touchy! If you do go up in the area by Baker pack a .44 pistol or at the least a .357 cause there are Cougar in the area so be carefull.
Another thought is finding a place to park the car and cleaning out the sand in the colverts on Santiam pass, or any other colverts since the ridges in them act like a sluice. Good luck.

Hello Tluza.....welcome from Arizona.  Follow homefire's advice.  There are lot's of interesting DYI projects for prospectors on those boards.  As for places to prospect, since you are in the United States, you should seriously consider joining GPAA which will then give you access to all of their claims nationwide. For what you get, membership is really reasonable.   If that's not your cup of tea, though, at least check out local prospecting clubs.  They often have exclusive access to specific claims.

Thank you both.... I am excited to go out into the field today! Lets see, should I buy a new metal detector, or pay for the gas to get a little further? This hobby can be a little spendy....

I am in Portland, but I am hoping to travel all over. I'll see if there is a THing club here, but I'm sure there is!

Welcome Tluza from the mountains of northeastern Oregon (La Grande)!  I used to play a little, years ago, at prospecting, gold pan, etc..  I built a small wood sluice box, but it disappeared years ago.  I detected at a few of the old ghost towns in this area.  There is a big club in the Portland area, but I don't remember their name.

Good luck with your prospecting!
