I live in Murrietta "territory".  While Joaquin was all over California but mostly the motherlode.  Never heard of him going to NM.  Doesn't mean he didn't.  I do know he was here in Amador County and various other counties.  He used to hide out in Hornitos (Mariposa County) and had an escape route under the main road from saloon to another building, if authorities showed up.  Here is a little on him and his legend.

I grew up in Merced and went to Hornitos as a kid.  That was my first encounter which is the legend of Murrietta.  I'm also a member of a Gold Rush days historical (and drinking society) called E Clampus Vitus.  We have a chapter called Joaquin Murrietta Chapter 13.  My web site at
