Fisher Gold Bug 2
« on: May 26, 2013, 06:19:34 am »
Go Up Go Down

Hello Im a newbie to metal detecting, well gold detecting. I have only used a medal detector once and that was a cheap radio shack one i found some square nails etc. I just bought a Fisher Gold Bug 2 and need some advice on what all i need to get with it?  What head phones do i need is there special kinds for metal detectors? Or can i use the cheap ones i have laying around here?  Also if there is any good pages to read about how to set it up and practice. I have some gold i have found in a area i pan. So i have some thing to test it with.     Any and all information will be very helpful. It will not be here til Friday but i want to be ready to hit the creek and creek banks as soon as its here.

Well a little more about me im a full time college student and im working full time this summer. But i plan on gold prospect as much as i can this summer. I hope there is some gold prospectors on here also so i can get some information, tips and tricks.  Im still a newbie and have much much to learn.

I hope the community here can help me retire on my gold finding  Detecting  LOL

Thanks in advance,

Shadowlid

P.S.  The coil of the Gold Bug 2 is waterproof right?

Welcome and congratulations on the upgrade.

When it comes to headphones, most of us do use the cheap ones partly because they tend to be lighter and more comfortable.  If you go that route, you'll probably need to get a headphone jack adaptor from Radio Shack....actually get a few and keep one in the glove compartment of your car (just in case).   They are cheap, so they won't break your college student budget.

Best advice is read the manual at least twice before you walk out the door with it.  Then go into your backyard or some place else where you can legally metal detect and use it for a couple of hours taking notes (either mentally or on paper or a recorder) about how it is responding, what you are finding, what makes sense to you and what doesn't.....then go back and read the manual a third time.   You'll probably find the manual and the detector both make a lot more sense with that third reading.

Welcome from NM!    Sounds like your on the path.

I myself don't use headphones because I need to be able to hear whats going on around me down here.

Ear Buds work fine for me.

Welcome to the forum from eastern Washington state.

I have been MD'ing for a couple of months now. I went to youtube and watched videos on my specific detector.  If anything you learn some techniques about MD'ing in general.  My biggest purchase was a pinpointer. I literally went back through my own back yard after getting the pinpointer, re dug holes I had previously dug and found some clad coins as well as my first Rosie. This obviously speaks to my level or expertise or lack thereof.  But watching videos and the pinpointer were game changers for me.

Happy hunting to you.

Heather
