very near impossible to get permission on farms

From news stories where the landowner gets half of declared treasure value, I'd think that you guys would have farmers begging you to search their fields or buying detectors themselves. Realize not every spot of land produces a qualifying reward, but it's no skin off the farmer to let you search so it seems they'd be more than willing for an opportunity to supplement their income.

K5000, cartwheel penny sounds like an interesting find - old and not struck very long so they must be rare. Nice coin to add to your collection. Those club member finds are impressive - I'm sure your BC finds will happen - probably when you least expect 'em. Sue

Hello K5000, welcome to THunting.com.   Sounds like you've jumped right in and got into some good discussions already.  Here in the US you don't have much chance of finding coins older than the early 1800's unless you leave on the Atlantic seaboard near one of the old colonial sites or in Florida, Texas, or (possibly, if you are real lucky) southern California where you might find old Spanish coins along the coast.  Typically, the further west you go, the younger the oldest coins you are likely to find get, although because of the California gold rush and movement from both directions after that, finding coins from the 1850's or 1860's can happen in most of the states.   Consequently, even your "modern" finds seem ancient to us and to most of our brethren in Canada.
