i use the soveriegn with a 12" coil. i hip mount the control box. i can't use it in the summer because it goes too deep. i have found stuff 12" or more deep. i don't know anything about the excaliber. one thing i have noticed about the programable detectors are that people have more trouble with them. they get it set up and all of a sudden that program is gone or not working. maybe they don't know all they should about it before going hunting. i guess i am old school. i really like my fishers but give minelab a thumbs up. good luck.
