It dose look interesting but I do have some queries about it non of the resistors are numbered diodes don't have values some resistors have a value like 270 I take it that it's 270R  and why is there a LM317T when you have a 5v out?

A resistor that only says 270 on the schematic or in the parts list is 270 ohm. That's just a bit of shorthand. The LM317T is used because it is a variable voltage regulator which is designed for a certain voltage using the resistors surrounding it. If you use one, be sure to heat sink it so it is more efficient and uses less of your battery current. The difference in battery life can be astounding with and without a heat sink.

GD this still dose not make any B%$#@ sense to me why have a variable rectifier when all you want is a five volt out  just place a 7805 and you have your five volts out also why have 18v battery pack with three rectifier's when you could have one 12v battery and one 5v rectifier OK two rectifier's one for the neg 5v. Do you see what I'm on about GD ?

Xavier, the LM317 costs less than the LM7805 which is no longer manufactured because of the low price of the LM317. Why have more than one die for the IC when one will do it all from 5 volts up to 30 volts. The new 7805 family of regulators are all low power/low dropout devices. They can't handle the  circuit loading like the LM317 can. The new regulators are all 3.3 volt circuits. Flavor of the month. Much lower power consumption. The name of the game is battery life.

Stop spinning your wheels, mate. The design is what it is. You asked. I answered. Don't get cross with me because you don't like the answer. I can't help it if your mule genes are sticking out and getting trod upon.

Shocked Cross with you ? I don't think so and I still don't see the logic of using a 7905 for the negative rail and an LM317 for the positive rail but I will find out.

Hi Japanese

Sorry mate but could you be a bit more specific I'm not quite sure what you mean but if you're asking me which one of these two machines is the better one then I'd have to tell you that I don't know I never build either of them but if I were to build an under water detector I would go for PI but then that's my personal opinion.

Hi Homefire

Now I get it Findzinis reworked the schematic but I'd like him to tell me why the LM317T I see that on the schematic that you posted there is a 7905 and 7805 do you have the original schematics for this machine ? or is the one that you posted the original ?

Thanks for your input Japanese

I have not Idea!

I did not realize that the 7905 or 7805 got turned of.

There still available around here.

The 79Lo5 and low power are getting hard to find but I have about 10 each.

Maybe that is all he had and used?
