When I made my bucket pump I used a piece of 3/4 copper tube for the wand and flattened the end to an oval about 3/8s wide. This worked great to solve clogs, but I did find that I got copper filings in the concentrates from rubbing it against the rocks. It was exciting for a moment till I realized what had happened.  Grin

You could do the same thing with pvc just heat it and flatten one end.
