johnMB;

Hi, I missed this thread, as Im still figuring out this site...

I was looking for some test stuff, for a friend, for the very thing you asked about... the friend died, about 2 wks ago, so Ive shelved the information.

Basically, plants take up all kinds of stuff, even heavy metals, but not as much as you would think. For instance, wheat takes up a lot nof selenium, which is a semi metal, thats why it can poison livestock, when they get into a field of young, green wheat. But not around here, because there is little or no selenium, in the local soil. (Infrared photography can work, too.)

He had a test kit to test for gold content, in plants and used up all the solution... I found a place that has similar kits for about $30 US. I dont know how good this test kit is, but it also tests for silver and apparently uses a colour change to indicate IF and HOW MUCH.

I Googled for two days to find this info and then filed it away, when my friend died, now I have to hunt it up again.... I will look in my bookmarks, its probably there.

This stuff is NOT the test for metal, it is for testing minute quantities of Gold and silver.... The other stuff is expensive and just for testing salvaged metals, mostly.

I looked in my bookmarks, but no go, so I will Google (I think I know what to look for) and get back to this thread... its real, I just have to find it again.

Hey! its now a couple hours later (I like this modify feature)  and I have the data... I found it two ways, because, originally I was searching for two different things:

I will upload a screengrab that shows the product and not much else.... funny that it is not available on this site that hosts the forum..... Christian, fix it, OK

I don't think this post has to do with what plants take up as much as what they show.

Some plant don't grow on dry gounds.

If you look at a hill you my be able to see a Fault line by what is growing.

Some times plants and stuff give you a hint of what is going on under the serface.

Eyeballing the lay of the land, is good, but there is more, like chemistry, and the reaction of the plants to minerals, which can show up in an infra red photo, where the eyeball might fail.

Kodak used to make a colour infra red film called .... hmmm can zackly remember... Infrared Ekta Aero??? It was great: tree leaves were all shades of magenta; grass was all shades of yellow to orange; skin tones were more or less normal; and  water was green, the cooler, the darker it was.

Problem with that film, you had to store it cold. Nowadays, you can use IR sensative, video cameras.

If you have the right connection, you can get satellite IR imaging. (AS used for archaeology.) Or..... get an RC model airplane and mount a small camera, in it. Ive got two small cameras (IR sensative, pin-hole,) that only  weigh about an ounce each (28.4 grams.) FM video is virtually noise free.

You can take video in long or short IR, short is also called near infrared, with a different response for each.

Just a thott!

Can you make your cheapy web cam portable?? Try it out.

I first became interested in IR photog, many years ago, Ive seen B and W prints made with different colours/kinds of filters:- it can certainly affect the appearance of vegetation.

Try a deep red filter on the cheeping web cam, or a filter that will limit visible light and pass infra red.

Then show us some of your results.

The two cams, I have, are B and W, but I need to wire a plug on each and connect up to either a VCR or DVD recorder and/or a modulator. I got these BECAUSE they are IR sensitive. I should shell out a few bucks and get an IR LED array, too.

Have fun.

Brian, all CCD cameras, including cell phone cameras and all digital cameras react to infrared remotes. Technicians know it is a quick and dirty way to test the batteries and function of a remote for any TV, VCR or DVD player.

GoldDigger1950;

Ah! But some are more equal than others , quote, quote.

Its all in the specs, for instance: Sony had a good little cam, with quote Night Shots unquote,
until someone found it would take infrared photos through sheer womens clothing, then they altered the camera, to still do night shots, but cut out the revealing bit. I suspect the new camera did not do as well.

Both the small B and W cams, I have, are equipped with pinhole lenses so there should be less focus problems. Infrared is a longer wavelength and refracts a bit differently. One has a CS lens mount and I presume, to use it, I have to pop the plastic pinhole mount, off.

I picked up a colour cam, a few years ago, at my fav used surplus place, Princess Auto, in Grande Prairie, Alberta. I got it CHEEP and it has excellant low light ability and colour. The saga of the cams continues. Crazy
