Ok since I'm new here i get to ask what some of you may consider a dumb question, (but i believe there is no dumb questions). I have only panned for gold one time before (years and years ago), I was kinda checking out the creek that runs through my property and i see tons of small glittery specs. I grabbed a few and believe them to be more fools gold. Does anyone have a few pics showing the difference in the real thing and fools gold, or is it that obvious even to a beginner, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Gold is dull yellow, not sparkly, unless it is crystalline gold. Then, only parts of it are sparkly. Fools gold also almost always has flat surfaces much like mica but golden in color. Real gold is more yellow than gold in color. With some impurities it can be anywhere from greenish to red in tint but the underlying color is always yellow.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Personally, I have never found those mica and fool's gold together with real gold. Others have so I won't speak unequivocally about that. Iron pyrite, mica and quartz are very light and travel along the stream more easily than gold. Comparatively, they almost float. Gold will always sink into crevices and depressions in the stream so dig deeply there, down to bedrock if you can, and pan what you find. You just never know what you will find there.

I eagerly await your results. Let me know if we are rich. Oops. I mean if YOU are rich.
