There was a thousand pounder nugget or over 900 pound nug found in California gold fields back in the days just after the 1849ers started doing their prospecting--I read it in one of the history of gold mining type books. I'd love to find such a prize. Great

hmmm you guys think the Welcome stranger was the biggest not so in fact there was an even bigger one called the halterman nugget or holterman nugget.  It was a real brute of a nugget and somehow never made the record books maybe some of you guys who are interested in those things can do a google who knows what your gunna find.
later on the hand of faith was found in victoria and that was sold to a casino in vegas for a cool million razoos nice find.

Alan, the Holterman nugget was a small reef of gold extracted as an aggregate of gold rather than a loose nugget. It didn't slip through any cracks. It was cut from the ground, not found as a nugget. Most prospectors would chip away at the rock and extract ore bit by bit rather than cut it out or dig it as one chunk.

What amazes me is that they found those 6 inches down? Must be some dang hard ground to hold that weight and not let it sink.
