Go Up Go Down

Coffee A friend of mine and his wife want me and my wife to go to Chama New Mexico to their old stomping- fishing ground, and camping grounds, on the river.  August 2010 time frame. Should I take my pan along and build me a sluice, along with my fishin pole??? The campground is about 5-6 miles below some dam up there?? Would appreciate any info available??  Wise  Amen  Pray

Thanks Pop's

I'd check to see if the area was open for prospecting or if there was already a claim on it first, but assuming it's open, I'd definitely take the pan with me (and expect to find some nice gemstones as well).   There's a lot of mining history in that area although a lot of it wasn't gold.

Also, if you have ANY interest in Steam RailRoading, I'd say the Cumbres-Toltec is a must ride.   You basically have two options with it 1) start either Chama, NM or Antonito, CO and ride the train to the half-way point at Ossier and then return to your starting point along the same track 2) or take the train all the way from Chama to Antonito (or vice versa).... With this option, you'll need to motorcoach either to your starting point before you board or back to it after your train ride has finished.   If you're only going to do the out and back, I think the New Mexico half is the prettier of the two (except for the first few miles betwen Ossier and Antonito).

I keep my pan, sluice, shovel, buckets and rock hammer in the truck at all  times. You never know when you might brake down and have to get a "fix" :Smiley Grin. My gear is like American Exp. I never leave home without it!!
