No problemo, Gramps. There's a few areas which have layers of sedimentary and igneous rocks as well as a mix of what appears to be conglomerate (with bits of nautilus shells in them) AND igneous. It's a bit puzzling...am teaching meself a bit of geology to understand such areas better, and maybe get ideas on where best to swing a detector. Thermoluminescence could possibly help me out too.

I know what you mean about learning some geology, I did a search for quartz formations in the county and came up with a report about the geology of the area including a list of minerals in PPM.  The only problem I have now is that I don't have the map that accompanies the report.  I've included the list, take care out there.

Looks like you gotta decent amount of Mn and a greater amount of Zn, Gramps. Yeah...research is the key to a lotta things. Any idea how deep and far apart were the soil/rock samples when they did the mineralogical survey?

No I'm afraid not, they just dicuss how different layers mingle with this one or that and different flood layers.  I did finaly find some maps but unfortunately for me they are in Adobe pdf format and I can't save them to a different format so that I can blow them up for esaier reading and printing.  Also the maps don't indicate where different mineral concentrations might be.

So unless you're interested in how volcanic action interacting with floods and landslide activity not where minerals might be deposited the report and maps are for you.  Otherwise it's a bust and won't replace just getting out there and trekking through the brush and sampling the creeks to find Old Mr. gold.

Take care,
Gramps

Gramps I'm of the opinion that 'gold is where you find it' as Gabby Hayes said.

Hobbyist, so serpentine lava metamorphoses into talc. That makes sense. All of the fresh volcanic rock I've seen looks like melted rock. Much harder than talc.  I gather you are on the pacific rim. Lots of volcanos there. Any big ones in your area?

That is true Gambol but if you can narrow down the places where you are more likely to find it.  As I am 68 I don't have the advantage of time to search every nook & kranny for the elusive old Mr. A. U. Gold.

Yes Gambol1 you're right...pacific rim area. So far I've yet to stomp around a big volcano...there is a big one I know of, but archaeologists are currently digging there and trespassing is a no-no!
