I would be cautious of putting any grease or oil anywhere where it may come in contact with the water.

As it stands right now with venting the cap the leather covered foam wheel is working pretty good, will reevaluate after I get the hoses and pump some water thru it.

Later,
Gramps

Gramps,

I was thinking. It isn't really that I need it, but there are a lot of members that need specific directions on how to build things. So maybe you could give some good plans? This is a piece of equipment that would be great in any prospectors arsenal, especially beginners. Think about it, if you like the idea then just let me know and we can put something together. Thanks.

Sean

I know they used Grease in sluices to trap Diamonds in the past.  The Diamonds are Hydrophobic (Don't bond with water) but sink right into the Grease.

Never heard of it being used for gold.  Mercury was used the same way.  Still used in some recovery operations but under controlled conditions.

Grease, oils and gold is not a good mix. It will cause fine particle to float better as it causes the surface tension of the water to be more difficult to penetrate. Fine gold can float naturally already, adding oils to the mix makes the larger fines float better as well. That is why people use JetDry or a similar product whilst going through their concentrates.

Cheers

There are two relations to gold and copper. One is in hardrock mining, and the other is in panning. In hard rock mining a copper sulfides can be a good sign of higher concentrations of gold nearby, I can't remember why but it is something I read from some geologist. The relation to panning is that the old time miners would coat the copper pans with mercury to make the gold stick. They would also do the same thing for shaker tables. Usually what they would do is after amalgamating to get the mercury from the gold, they would dissolve the amalgam in nitric acid to to remove the mercury from the gold. They would then coat their gold pans with the nitric acid. That is what I am familiar with. If anyone else has more knowledge, feel free to correct me.

Cheers

Sean

Normal grease definitely bad. Plumber's grease doesn't break down in water so you don't get that nasty residue. It's used in potable tap water faucets and such.

Gold can be found in many places amaytz. Usually people frequent historical mining areas because it's sometimes easier to find where someone else has found it. In my area tiny flour gold can be found almost everywhere but it's very sparse in most places. I've even gotten gold from the hillside behind my house which isn't a historical mining location.
