Pictured  below is a cannonball probably  fired October 30, 1813.  The background is a picture someone painted of the battle.  To read the story go to the main page and find:  Information and Resources.  Go to Treasure Articles and click on Napoleonic site.

Where was it found?

Now what you should do, ( I have a few cannonballs and US Civil War arty rounds)  is, first scrape all of the loose rust off it, then put it in the oven at about 150 degrees F for about 1/2 an hour..then let it cool off in the oven.
This get the moisture out of it and there will be moisture there and the ball will crumble over the years if you don't get it out.

After the ball has cooled down but is still warm, you should coat it with clear lacquer  to stop moisture from getting back in, this will keep the ball strong and good for many years.

Dean

Dean,
The ball was from Hanau.  In the story is a map of the battlefield.

     Thanks for the preservation tips.
