I did speak to an old timer and he did say that iron balls were used on chimmney brushes so it does have valid insight, its hard to really get an idea from a 2D picture. Old timer said they rarely used the ball weaights cause of the fact that it would somtimes smack the flue lining and or crack the refractory cement, most used burlap sacks with chain in it instead to not break or crack the chimmney flues.

I do think its a chain shot tho because of the area I found it and the history of the harbor and islands.

Thanks for the saftey tip! I remeber when that happened it was all over a few sites and ones he belonged to. but chain shot was all but nearly extinct by 1850's as wooden masts and sails was phasing out.

Hey Atomic-
Glad to see that you did not hit the eject button. I did run across a site where this guy had a collection of over 400. I just haven't back tracked far enough yet.

yep i'm a Mainah, the Abanaqui indians show most the early settlers here how to catch and or harvest shellfish. Theres an area close by where i live on the coastline where indians used to harvest clams, muscles and lobsters then take them less then a mile away to a small fresh water pond and clean up thier catch. Even today you can see huge piles of seashells... the funniest is people that stare at the seashells wondering why the heck there on the shore of a fresh water pond  Funny
