Viking,

Very nice find that one.... a friend of mine also found a flintlock hammer. I have also found a gold Kruger Pond 1893.... so do not give up on the old stuff..... You are actually in a better place than I am (Johannesburg)....

Thanks PGill
I don't know if I agree with you about our locations exactly. You are closer to the Boer War sites. Cape town doesn't really offer much in the line of historical places that could still be detected. Most are already developed or inaccessible to the general public. We do have the beaches but even this offers slim pickings.
I am quite keen to get onto the Battle of Blaauberg site, but I will have to sneak on and it is in thick rooikrans bush and close to the Du Noon location so I will have to be really careful...maybe even have a gun in my kit. There should be some really good relics lying about though and it may just be worth the risk.
I would really like to hear the story about the Kruger Pond, and I am sure that our friends here on the site would also. I think it may be time for you to post the story! Smiley

Hi Viking,

What I meant about you in a better place is that you have beaches, tourist areas, sunken ships, and the early day traders, and battle fields. Johannesburg is still a new place being only a couple of hundred years old. Yes we do have the Boer war sites, but you also cannot just go on them unfortunately. Any detecting on them is at your own risk I guess  Club

Check out this topic on this site for information and photos of my finds:

Hi Pgill
Wow, nice site I have just become the agent for First Texas Products in South Africa and I am busy with a site for the detecting side. I will let you know once the site is up . I  had goose flesh looking at the pics of the gold coin find. You must have been shaking like a leaf when you realized what you had found! That's a find of a lifetime. By the way what machine are you using I couldn't really tell from the pics.
The battle of Blaauberg site haunts me at night so close... yet so far. I actually think I am going to visit some of the local farmers around that area and see if I can't get access via one of their farms. But the guys are very cautious here. They don't really like people scratching around on their farms.
It really makes life difficult for people like us.
Anyway I will keep in touch and if you ever want to get a new machine just drop me a line.
Kind regards
Oscar

Thanks Viking for the reply,

Thanks for visiting the website  Great I am using an old Tesoro Silver Sabre II detector. It does work well, but must admit, would prefer something newer and with a display.
What is the firm doing that you work for? Do they do detectors, and what makes?

When I found the coin, it was an amazing time. The best thing though, is that I had someone to share the good fortune with as I had a friend with me when I found it. The moment I saw the coin,I knew it was gold..... I did the happy dance  Idiot

I know what you mean about people being weary, but I cannot blame them.
