A civil War era sloop was discovered in the Hillsboro River in Tampa, FL last week. Billy Norris of the Florida Aquarium discovered the Kate Dale buried in the mud of the river. The ship was burned by Union forces in Oct 17, 1863. Another vessel, the Scottish Chief was also burned but it has not been found. The Florida Aquarium has a $50,000 grant to search for historic vessels in central Florida. The Kate Dale was surveyed and reburied. It was determined that it would be too costly to recover and preserve.
