Hardluck, I wonder how many people here have ever contacted archaeologists to offer their help. Over my lifetime in treasure hunting, I've assisted them and police as well. Both camps recognize the difficulty in becoming an expert at using the machines we use. Oh, the both use metal detectors but you are probably a bit like me. My focus and concentration on finding a target rely both on the knowledge of my equipment and my understanding of how things are lost or hidden. There's no substitute for experience.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

HI All, nice post and some great pics, thanks Hardluck and all. As much as id like to have a chance at recovering this treasure, I also consider it a National treasure ") If someone can hunt the treasure without distruction to the wreck, and document for the knowledge of all I say go for it. I'm also for the preservation of the wreck site. Seeing the glass bottles and china on the sea floor with the wreck there is priceless

Hey all

I think that working with archaeologists is now an accepted and effective thing in England with the law relating to the discovery of a treasure governed by the Treasure Act of 1996. But this is not the case in France, unfortunately. Is it the same in the rest of the world?

Hello Luc

The British Model for treasure trove laws is fairly fair. However there is an active push by some elements of the British Archeological profession to sign up to the UNESCO agreement of shipwrecks.

You could once upon a time make an application to the British receiver of Shipwrecks for salvage rights other than vessels of historic importance or war graves.
