Hello All
Here is some information on a little known shipwreck off the coast of New Zealand.
TASMANIA 2,252 gross tons, 1,265 net. Lbd: 286' x 38'5" x 20'9" Steel passenger steamship built by C S Swan & Hunter, Wallsend on Tyne for this concern. Triple expansion engine producing 290 nhp.
It was intended she compete with the New Zealand shipping concern Union Steamship Co., for the Sydney - Hobart passenger trade, but after agreements were made, she ended up on the Trans-Tasman run. 1893 she serviced the Western Australia - Melbourne run. Foundered off the New Zealand coast, at Table Cape on the Mahia Peninsula , 29th July 1897
She also carried considerable treasure consisting of 24000 pounds worth and 5000 pounds worth of jewelery. Today's value is a good 12 million plus. There was an attempt to salvage her in 1903. But as far as we know the results were unsuccessful. It seems the shipwreck has returned to its peaceful slumber provided if some one has not already salvaged her in secret.
Hardluck
