Treasurehunter had a good question . He found a piece of wood on the shores of Washington . He asked me what I thought about it . Well TH wood is wood as they say . However a piece of wood found at the beach should let us think a little about it . First of all you should take a GPS bearing on it , or if you don't have a GPS recorder make sure you remember where you picked up this wood . Now , as I said wood is wood and could come from just any place . Keep it submerced at all times . Cut a piece off and let it dry out . If it satys in one piece you may have young wood . If it crumbles it is most likely old wood . Than try to find out what kind of wood you have . Pine , cedar, oak . mahogany .  If it is mahogany you may have some kind of part from a Spanish ship comming from the Philipines . If it is oak you may also have a Spanish ship but morelikely you have a ship coming from Europe . It could also be a Spanish ship that was built in Spain . If the wood is still pretty solid it is mostlikely a youger wreck . Could be a coaster or seal-hunter . The wood alone does not give you a wreck because it could have drifted quite a distance before it was washed up . Closer examination on that certain spot of coastline may shine more light on the subject . A detector sweep close to the waterline may detect some more clues . Other wise you have to calculate the current in that particular spot , as well as prevailing wind directions  and look ,, up stream ,,  from the particular spot . It is not easy to determine what you have found but it is half the fun trying to find out . This is called research and I like it . Let me know if you get more info .   Cornelius

Hi Cornelius,
Thank You for the information, I didnt have a gps recorder with me, but i did
document the exact location. I'll be going back up to where I recovered the wood very soon,
in the mean time I'll do some further research and see what I have. I'll keep You informed
on the progress and findings. Again thanks. Best Wishes...Rob
