Isn't there already some law or treaty that would already cover this issue in the first place.? Steve

If I was a lawyer for Fishers, I'd sure argue that Bolivia couldn't claim the treasure unless they'd been calling it a part of the country's assets in their government's accounting each and every year since the ship went down. Otherwise, I think it would just be abandoned property.

This lawsuit isn't going anyplace but that's my thinking also.

Steve

That sounds about right.  "Nope, didn't find anythin, didn't see anything, don't know anything."

The lawyers must have way too much time on their hands to fantasize about having a snowballs chance in hell of even coming remotely close to winning anything.

I doubt the case is going anywhere as well.

Keeping your mouth shut will only work in some cases. The Atocha was never one of them

Alternative would be melting all the metal into bars and then possibly risk being questioned over the source. Gems. They'd have had to deal with characters worse/more dangerous than lawyers probably to turn that find into $. Sue

One of the ways to hide might be to buy a gold mine along with some equipment then smelt the bars adding some copper etc in the process,Thus hiding the source. Gold can be traced. It sounds good in theory but whether it would work or not is a different story.

Over two thirds of the Atocha treasure has been sold in to private hands. They could never recover it all. Also, Mel sold emeralds for six times the going rate because of the certificate of authenticity that says it came from a famous shipwreck.

In theory- they could have brought a gold mine along with some mining equipment and laundered it that way. Melt the bars down and add copper and silver to erase the possible source. Of course once you do that- you've reduced it to the value of bullion. The marks on the bars themselves were worth a premium on top of that.
