I can only imagine how exciting it must have been back in the 1800s and before. So many old places were just forgotten relics and few people cared about them. I think I could wander about for weeks just looking at the masonry work and how it all flows together.

It's a lesson we need to heed today. Our craftsmanship has fallen into a world of disposable things. How many things that you or I own will survive a thousand years of time?
These amazing places were built as defensable strongholds and yet the architecture of many is more pleasing (at least to me) than most modern buildings I can think of. Add to that all the history involved to complete an amazing package.
I wonder if the vision of the builder as he placed that first stone was anything close to the finished product? :)

It is very hard to know what is myth and what is fact in regards to the Templar's. There are so many outragous claims about them. It has been very fashionable for persudo historians and societies to make connections with them. The trouble is most is speculation and hearsay.
Perhaps the Vatican library will one day reveal her secrets to us and help unravel some of the mysteries that surround the Templars.
But of course that could be when you know what freezes over ;D

I wonder if anyone has done any patina testing on the Royston carvings? Like the recently discovered religious fake inscriptions of the James Ossuary, we could date the carvings by the age of the patina. If samples date significantly earlier than 1700 then the site could be real. Or as in the case of the ossuary, real with additions :)

Hi hardluck, I dont think there is any doubt the Royston Cave carvings are anything but genuine. At the time it was discovered there was no gain to be had by forgery and it was well documented by the people of royston. It is a pity they didn`t protect the carvings from visitors who started a fashion to carve their names or initials into and over the exsisting carvings thus making it harder to decipher the original messages.
