Go Up Go Down

Spent the day on the shore of a dried up lake here in Florida. There are lots of those here.

the bullet of unknown calibre was found on the dry bed of the lake. It appears to have been shot into the water as evidenced by its entirely rounded and smooth surface.

Sue, I think this is going to be a fun site. It was used back in the 30's and 40's as a camp site for locals. Some of the big oaks of that age are still there and the remains of bottles and coins of that age are under them. Almost no aluminum there only an occasional pop top or can lying on top. The oldest coin was a 1940 wheat.  As the lake dried up the beach moved further and further out so the artifacts are spread over 2 or 3 separate beaches which are dry now. In the 80's it bacame a park and lots of landforming was done. The top 6 inches of sand was spread out  and new sand was brought in to make a new beach. The new beach which is dry as a bone now has lots of coins but also lots of aluminum. No silver yet but I'll keep trying.

Sounds like an ideal area to detect. Just knowing the history of an area is more of an asset than about anything else. Nice that aluminum isn't a major obstacle - one of the great things about old sites. I'm sure you'll be popping some silver out of the ground. Wonder what else you'll find that those campers from the 30s & 40s lost? Sue

Went back today spent 6 hours and didn't find much. About 75 cents in clad. Oldest coin 1971. Fishing sinkers, bullets and shells, lots of melted aluminum and some odd junk. I'm going back tomorrow and give it one more try. I'm looking for some historical maps of the park to determine where the beach was in the 1930's-40s.
