thanks BA..it is deeper though like a bowl...I had an older lady here in the area tell me the following...that when people used the old wood cooking stoves, they would take the eye off and would inlay a cast iron bowl like this in the spot so it would be closer to the fire..this one has lost its handle though, if, in fact, that is what it is..we'll see

Usually the handle got broke or burnt off, and they used em anyway they could Wise
here's an old one that was steel and they had wired scraps o wood on it, got this on the continental divide, old loggin camp that was closed/tore up in 1840's Wise Wise Wise Wise

I left the pan the way it was,, the COLUMBIA  stove door beside it i gave to my son, he cleaned it up, painted it flat black with gold lettering, and has it on the wall in his family room, looks real nice. Wise
