Hey there buddy, GW inaugeral buttons were the first pieces of true Americana. There was no commemoratives made for george washingtons inaugeration, but there were these buttons made from copper, bronze and brass. What happended was that they melted down the cannons and mortors after the american revolution and made these planchards, disks and they were given to the local jewelers and crafts people. You had to be a person of means to own one, common people couldn't afford it. they were also worn after the inaugeration in parties to show political support. at the time, george washington was the most beloved man in america. everyone loved and trusted him. Make story short, there was 70 known varieties of 20 different types. some people say there are 500 but only 380+ have been documented. So somewhere is the real number. I have a facebook page i just started george hunter if you search, become a friend and i will be giving good info on this. These are found in usually new england states in old cellar holes our stone foundation areas where settlers would live. I will enclose a picture of a Rare GW i own! robert
