If the coin was found near a historic gold mining area, I may be able to help identify the period and area in China it is from. Don't need to know the exact location, just the region.

The coin looks a little odd to me like it's either been painted or plated sometime during its lifetime. That doesn't mean to say it's not genuine. It might be. If it's plated iron or steel, probably it's a replica. If it's brass or copper, it's probably real but as yet unidentified.

Can you run it near a magnet and see if it's iron or steel? That would be a good step towards being sure.

Yep those chinese coins pop up all over the world,

i found these chinese coins on the old gold diggings near where i live here in OZ.
