Beautiful day yesterday. My wife and I headed to several locations and ended up in a Chicago woods wherein using my BH Pioneer 505 (one of my favorites) she found this old US military button. We need help identifying the era because the backmark is missing. We have an idea that it could be from the 1875-1902 timeframe because the of lined shield and background, but not sure. Anyways I was stunt by this find because, although a part is missing, it is still a great piece of American history  Clapp

No Karl that's not the one. It looks similar but there are differences. I had already seen that one page. Thanks.

Sorry to disappoint you, but that same design was used for Army over coat buttons in both WWI and WWII  (complete with lined shield and background) and pretty sure the same button style was used at least up into the early 60's

yep, and that design (General Services button) has been in use 1902.

Between 1875 and 1902 (including the Spanish American War era) they looked more like this:

Yes!! That's the one. Many thanks to all of you that replied. Strange find by the Des Plaines River's woods. It was on the surface by a trail as though it was unearthed by soil erosion. So used on military coats from 1902 to about 1945 or later  Cool

Oh, not to worry. Not disappointed at all, just confused by the many designs. Thanks for the info.
