Hi.
I'm new to MD hobby. I bought my first metal detector yesterday. I decided to go with HF 9 function metal detector as it had quite good reviews and is affordable.
I didn't want to buy expensive detector since I don't know if I'm into MD yet.
So I started to practice in my backyard. I wasn't sure if I will be able to find anything, but I found too much. My detector beeps almost everywhere.
I started to dig. Found around 50 nails. Ok, that's not fun. I started to play with discrimination and it turned out that this detector discriminates iron quite well.
Detector no longer beeps everywhere I go. After 30 minutes and 5 holes later I found something that I can't identify.
I thought it was a water valve first, but it's a bit too irregular in shape. It was whole black at first so I started to clean it(used toilet cleaners). The black stuff became red after using Lysol. Lots of bubbles and it started to reveal some color.
Is this some king of ore? Copper? Melted brass?
How do I perform identification? Any DIY testing methods?
Thanks for looking.
Kris.
