Go Up Go Down

Finally got a metal detector and tried going in my backyard yesterday. Well I was surprised to find something so soon. I dug and found nothing bu the pile I dug showed there was metal so I thought I might know the answer. I got a rare earth magnet and sure enough I have lots of Iron in my back yard. Will be going on a walk latter today by some old railroad tracks and will use it there maybe I will find something besides Iron, and now I know to bring a magnet, and if there is metal all over I am probably surrounded by Iron.

I went to the railroad tracks and more Iron. If I get a good metal detector can I drown out the stupid little stuff like Iron or no? I am just using a homemade one.

you can, but you may not want to......there's a lot of neat iron stuff out there, especially along railroads (and to find it, you have to put up with the spikes, nuts, bolts, etc).   Believe it or not, some people like collecting date nails.

Yes, absolutely.
All commercial detectors (except maybe Pulse induction) have the ability to be able to cancel out ferrous material like iron.
You should be able to get a good detector secondhand from maybe Ebay.
Names to look for - Tesoro, Garret, Whites, Fisher, Minelab, Xp
Try and steer clear of the cheap chinese stuff - they aren't too good.
