GD, I'm no authority on these things but to me it looks too small for the grape shot in the picture. Those are in layers of 5. a .75" shot would form a layer of 6 or more in a 6" gun. There was another type of shot that was used in the American Civil War. It was loaded in a bag which contained pieces of metal of all sizes. (cannister?) The flattening could be due to impact.

Ridgerunner, In my experience here in florida, the thickness of the coating depends on the age of the shot and also where you find it. The oldest will have a coating very thick on younger lead bullets (1910-1945) it may not exist at all. i GUESS how fast a piece of metal oxidizes depends on several things. How wet the soil is. How much 'humic acid' the soil has in it. and lastly the annual temperature. I see this with aluminum cans. The hybrid aluminum top cans were made for a short period of time. in the 1960's I still find them When they are in dry sand like up on a sand ridge they are still in pretty good condition. When they are in a wet area of black soil they are pretty ragged. acid and water and heat speed up the oxidation.

The brown bess was a .75 caliber smooth bore rifle used by the british during colonization of the Americas, between 1756 to 1813 it was shortened for use by the corps of the dragoons, the grenadiers, the Royal Horse-Guards and the Artillery. Later a british 75 caliber musket was mass produced starting in 1842 and made all the way in to the time of the U.S. civil war. If it were grape shot you should be able to find a lot of others in the same area. If not probably from one of the muskets.

Hi Guys

OK so this has a white layer on it but not all over. It was found on top of a very vegetated dune about 500m from the beach. It has an egg shape rather than a ball shape like if it had been pressed on one side. It also has a flat part that goes with the roundness of the ball like you would have if you were to take a ball of moulding clay make a ball then run it on a table about 1/3 of the circumference.  Other than that I'm quite happy with this find so I will go back to the area and give it a better search but the bush is very dense so it will be a slow process.

Thanks to all for your input.
All the best
Xavier

That was one of the clearest photos representative of a grapeshot, not the only one or the only size used. It comes (or came) in a variety of sizes.

Xavier,

I personally do not think they are lead shot...... You get balls of this size in Kreepy Kraulies for the swimming pool.... these balls also look white from the chemicals....

I also remember that we used a bomb in Rhodesia that was dropped from an aircraft that was full of balls similar in size to these.... They would explode and act like shrapnel..... Not sure though if this type of bomb was used in South Africa or not.

Otherwise look at the net idea, that could be plausible to where you are....

Hi Peter

I use to make nets for fishing and you must have a hole in the sinker so that's out the Kreepy Kraulie well there are no swimming pools in this area mate. LOL

Hey Xavier,

You may have grapeshot but we would need to get more details as to sizes of shot to compare them  Great it would be great if they are shot.....
