Go Up Go Down

Hello folks!  My husband found this coin under the floorboards of our 1700's kitchen.  I'm going to look it up but in the mean time, do any of you have information on this piece?  Thanks.  Susan

Can someone advise me with a frequent problem attaching photo files?  I have no problem with any other site.  I get an error message that makes no sense.  "Your file is too big!  Your size is 2873847 KB..."  My photo files are only about 2.8 MB (or 2800 KB). What gives?  Thanks.  Sorry if I am posting this in the wrong place.  Susan

It's a bug in the algorithm that calculates file size and then sends the photo to the GD module for processing into a thumbnail. As long as the photo gets here, it's only an annoyance. It is on the list to be fixed.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hi Susan.....you don't say how big the coin is, which is important in helping to identify it.  You also don't provide a picture of the reverse which is also helpful.   However, I'd say it is pretty safe to say you have a Spanish coin from the late 1700's probably a reale or half reale.

A couple other things that may help. Take a couple shots with different angles on the coin. Or try to make out the writing yourself and post what you see. Sometimes faint writings don't show even on the best of pictures. If I am right that was from the 1770's to 1780's Spains King CAROLUS III AKA King Carlos III , But it could be from any of the countries Spain ruled at the time.

Here is a 4 maravedis of the same approximate time.

Thank you.  You are absolutely right.  I have the coin in olive oil to get a better view of the mint date.  Good old king Carolus of Spain, aka King Charles III.  Susan

Hi Susan,
I also think you have a coin from Spain, I have attached a pick of an 8 real piece that I found a long time ago the size will determine if denomination it is, this one is a little bigger than a silver dollar the others are one real pieces...HH....Johnnn

Thanks, Johnnn.  My coin is the size of a dime, so it is a 2 reale piece. You have a  nice collection of silver.  Susan
