Like you, I thought about the set being mid-60s at least. Unlike you, I never thought about the possibility of a confusion about the mission of the historical society in its beginnings. Yet, it makes a lot of sense and seems like a logical explanation for the typo.  Cool

Of course, it doesn't help that the misspelling shows up in recent news articles.   (One of the disadvantages of relying on spell-check and of teachers not emphasizing the difference between the two to the degree they did when we were growing up).   I came across several yesterday.
