Well, my run on the beach here was short lived. I have'nt hit anything decent in days. I am about to plastic bag my MD coil and try the surf, well in the 1-2 feet deep range. My MD coil is water proof so I should be OK? I think there are others MDing here. I never see anyone in the surf, is that a good place to go? Of course I mean during still water, not a rough sea. Any input appreciated. Happy hunting! John

As long as your coil is truly waterproof, you should be all right. When I was surf hunting with a land type detector, I used an extension coil and mounted the electronics in a chest harness that I build from webbing. I still had access to the controls and the box was away from the water by a good distance. I used a galvanized pipe to replace my shaft. Even though it was heavier than aluminum, it weighed less overall because the box was off the handle area. I used a shower cap to cover the knobs. Still do, at the beach, for all of my machines. Keeps sand out of the potentiometer shafts.

THX Golddigger! I am going with the poor man rig. tripple bag the coil with plastic bags.lol My detector is cheap and I am ready for a new one. But availibility is an issue for me being in Japan. However, I think it will be OK. Truly water-proof, that's a great point and I did not think of that. Ya in the instruction manuel it says so, but, hummm. I'll let you know how that works out for me. Do you have much luck in the surf? John

Be warned that some detectors leak where the pipe connect to the box and water could seep in despite the bagging. If yours leaks, seal it.

Your right, I am not going to chance it now. I forgot about the pipe. I am sure soon as I tip the MD the water will run right to the box. OK thanks for the schooling, I needed the wake up call. I am going to a new beach today or tomorrow, I don't think it's been fished for a while. It's remote, but the Japanese flock there to swim by the hundreds. Thx again, John

John, the bagging is just splash protection. The warning I gave you is direct experience talking. I actually had that happen. Fortunately, I was able to fix my detector and it still lives today.

Hi GD. I'm back from Los Cabos. I tried the surf over there with my BH Pioneer 505 in all metal mode with ground balance and it didn't work. It was constantly sensing the water. In autonotch with all metal low discrimination it did not even work in wet sand. Constant falsing. I kept the sensitivity always at 12:00 o'clock. It was fantastic on dry sand though! What did I do wrong so I don't repeat the same mistake?
