Go Up Go Down

Spent this morning detecting the beach with my EuroAce/Nel Tornado coil combination and found very little other than a great deal of frustration. The early high tide had soaked the beach all the way to the foot of the dunes and the wet sand drove the EuroAce wild. Normally I only have to drop the sensitivity by two or three notches but this morning I was having to knock four or five notches off.  Cry

Saturday last had been a better day. I started detecting an equestrian centre but found the earth to be as dry as a bone and as hard as iron. I gave up after one or two unidentifiable copper coins, some bits of lead, and having been bitten by several nasty flying insects. Driving home I decided to check out two other small fields that I have permission to detect. The winter wheat was still standing but I spotted a two meter strip of ground at the end of one of the fields that had not been planted. Once set up again; it was only a matter of yards before the EuroAce started to ring out like some demented bell ringer.

More scrap, I supposed! Backing up slightly, I started to advance again but more slowly this time. Well, the first target turned out to be Quarter Dollar and the second was a UK 50p decimal coin. The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth coins all turned out to be US small denomination coins. Dimes, Quarters, Cents, and ten cent coins all followed in quick succession! I was working an area no larger than one square meter and the coins were just below the surface. The deepest coin was no more than two inches down. Putting the detector to one side, I continued to work using my Garrett ProPointer.

Being a UK field, I initially had visions of some American visitor cavorting in the hay and suffering a pocket spill but once I reached a count of fifty I dismissed the possibility of it being a pocket spill. Perhaps the coins came from a hastily abandoned card school, or a pitch & toss session. Once the winter wheat has been harvested I will return and see if I can extend the search beyond the initial square meter. Oh, I forgot to mention that ten of the coins were well rotted and there was a piece of bone in amongst the treasure.  Shocked

Hi Christoph1945

Like your post but your photos are too small, you really should re-size them to 600 x 800 it's a nice size and not too big for the upload.

All the best

OK, I will follow up on that and try and improve my pictures. Not having cleaned any of the coins, they haven't photographed very well.  Sad

I like the little jest "Across the Pond" which refers to the US / British union of WWII. I was born just hours after our country invaded Normandy on June 6th, 1944. My ancestors came from "Jolly Ol' England" in 1670. Across the pond, "Wellington" (my last name) is an old established name from about 1020. People in Australia, Japan, or Australia are not quite across the pond. HeHe Grin

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

Thanks for the examples Xavier; upon following your advice, my next photographic posts should show considerable improvements.

Hi Carl,
initially, I thought that the coins were going to be some GI'S pocket spill from the war years but at a total count of some fifty coins he would have to had rather deep pockets. I am presently trying to follow up on some research for the area and will be returning to the field tomorrow. Hopefully, tomorrow, the farmer will have harvested in the wheat and I will be able to investigate a larger area around the spot where the coins were situated.

I will report back here on this thread any more finds from that field. I should also be able to post some better photographs, based on Xavier's photographic advice.

I wonder why there was so many US coins in one place but what is more worrying is the piece of Bone that was with them,

I found a few lots of coins like that, most one and two cents.
The reason is that people use to keep the loose change in the ashtray of there cars. Often empty the content with the cigarette buds and ashes when was full.

I can see the logic in the ashtray theory; just as I could initially see the logic in the possibility of a pocket spill, but as the coin count quickly grew and I reached the grand total of fifty coins ( mostly US small change ) I dismissed the theory of a pocket spill.

I returned to the field today and commenced detecting the square meter area where I recovered the fifty coins from last Saturday and couldn't find a single coin in that small area. The standing wheat had been harvested and the field now had only stubble for me to contend with. Upon slowly fanning out from the original area I found not a single coin!!  Sad

Having made the find here in the UK, I also was puzzled by the number of US coins in the group and even more puzzled by the three Canadian coins. Some people have suggested that someone just threw some old travel money away over the fence, but would they also throw away their English coins? I just don't buy that one!

As for the piece of bone........Hmmmm!

I called at the only house that backs onto the field and asked if they had ever had a burglary and the owner's daughter confirmed that they had a burglary some years ago but I would have to speak to her father to get more details of the incident.
Incidentally, I didn't mention the piece of bone!  Wink
