Go Up Go Down

Out today having some fun in our secret stash area and I found this ring. Down maybe 6". Pulled it out gave it a rub and it's a silver colored metal. Now I have no idea how to tell if it is platinum or white gold. It is not silver for sure. Polished up very nicely. There was not any tarnish or build up of any sort on it. Now for the interesting part. This ring does not have any markings at all in regards to "plat" or "925" nothing. It does however have very many tool marks on it and inside of it. I hope the pictures have enough detail to show the marks. It is a very nice ring. Just strange that there are no markings any where. Not even on the top of the ring. It certainly looks handmade. Really hand made. Any ideas? It was found in an area where I have found a Civil War Eagle Infantry button.

In days gone by, we youngsters used to make rings from large brass or steel nuts by filing them. First on the inside to remove the threads and then on the outside to remove the corners. Shaping them came later.

They looked a lot like your ring, complete with tool marks.

If it's magnetic (attracted to a magnet), it's steel. If not, you're back to square one. Some grades of stainless steel are not magnetic.

Nope not ferrous. That was my first guess.

All the pictures are from after I polished it. It was just dull when I pulled it out of the ground. Still silver in color, but dull.

It could be a ring made by either an amateur silversmith or one who doesn't use touch marks. That .925 and 14k you see in a ring is called a touch mark.

I hope you have a real treasure there.

If it had any black or "antique" looking areas before you cleaned it up it may be silver. The alloy looks a bit too white for silver though. It looks more like a white gold or a platinum alloy. I have seen quite a few pieces of jewelry without hallmarks. An acid test is the best way to check the alloy.

Going to get an acid test this week. May also take it to an old time
Jeweler. I would like to get his impressions on it. I will keep you posted. Thanks for looking. You can view the video on YouTube. Just do a search under dgrs2 and all my treasure hunting vids will pop up.
