Go Up Go Down

I found this panning and sluicing in an Indiana Creek. I came up with it in my classifier and it immediately caught my attention. It weighs 96.5 grams. There are numberous grooves of varying depths and widths throughout, that overlap, intersect, and wrap around the shape of the piece. It produced a signal when I passed my goldbug over it, but it is non magnetic. I first thought it might be a meteorite, but I've never seen a meteorite; so I really wouldn't know in the first place. Any help would be appreciated. Is this just another piece of leverite?

Have you calculated the specific gravity on it?

You're going to have to weigh the rock both in air and in a known weight of water.   The ratio of the two is the specific gravity.

That rock is heavy for the size, but known metallic meteorites are magnetic. I'm in the process of taking pictures of the rocks I have found that are not magnetic, but contrary to yours are really light. Yes find the gravity and that will let you know the kind of metal it is.

It could be a kidney stone from a large mammal. The grooves are consistent with hair wrapped around the stone as it was forming and most stones are made of calcium.
Just postulating from the looks.

Follow the link below. Maybe Mr. Meteorite (Ruben Garcia) might have a clue. It seems that it is not a meteorite, but this guy is a meteorite guru and may help. Try it out and let us know. He also has a lot of pictures and videos in his site.
