It's an Anglo-English slang term for a coin that is worthy of keeping rather than spending or other disposal - perhaps melt value on a silver or gold coin that is damaged. I sometimes find coins that have been whacked with a lawn mower, for example. Silver coins in that condition are only worth their intrinsic value rather than numismatic value.
