Go Up Go Down

Went out today for about an hour, found nothing but a fair size lump of lead. Took it home and was going to put it in the coffee can I keep all my lead finds in but the can was full. Nothing to do but melt it down. The dirty lead was fishing sinkers , tire weights , bullets, and sheets and lumps of melted lead. Most of the weight came from the same location where there are a sizable number of lumps of melted lead laying about. My friend Bill suggested there was a gas station there because of the auto parts he found and the melted lead. He figured the gas station burned down and the lead was melted. Made sense to me but I had another Idea. In 1900-1920 mechanics melted babbit metal to cast crank shaft bearing with. I thought this might be where they emptied their melting pot. babbit metal is lead or tin with copper or antimony. It is about as heavy as lead but melts at a higher temperature. It turns out it melted at a higher temperature than the fishing sinkers, bullets and plumbers lead and it formed a slush when it cools. The coffee can is empty now so I can start over. gambol

B.A. Lets see, 40 cents a pound x 7.5 lb = $3.00. It cost me about $2.50 for the propane to melt it. It would cost another $3.00 for gas to carry it to the scrap yard. Mmmmmm... I think I'll just hang on to it till I find a use for it. It makes a good door stop and it would make a good anchor for a small boat. too heavy for a frisbee.  Any other suggestions? Funny

Didn't know that. I guess they add it to make them stronger.

Well, you could always do what Johnnn does and make decorative castings.  But if you do, I'd be careful which castings you chose to share with us (don't want to go through another round of legal hobby copy vs counterfeit  Sad  )
