Go Up Go Down

The find of a life time. Big statement?
Perhaps not. Be the judge. I want your feedback.
On Thursday I went under water detecting with my detecting buddy.
I was hopping for an other Gold ring. After all I had a good string of luck the last two hunts on the beach.
We are about half an hour in to the search, neck deep in the water.
My fried call me over; he was 5-6 meters away of me.  His voice sounds scratchy his face didn’t look good. He was shaking.
-Do you know what this is?? Asked and show me a shiny disk on his hand.
Of course I new. I spend most of my spare time looking through coin books. It was a GOLD SOLIDUS.
Perhaps for you guys in Europe or Asia Minor it’s not unusual to find this type of a gold coin.
But a Gold Solidus, in Melbourne, Australia in the water in the bay? Hello? How did it come here? Long bow but does the coin changes the history of Australia’s discovery as we know it?
At the same spot we also found a lot of brash nails. A ship wreck perhaps? Am i dreaming?. Please someone wake me up.
I finish the day with two rings one silver and one gold.
We have not dated the coin yet. I need to go through the coin books and identify it. Perhaps someone in the forum will know.
I photographed a ruler next to the nails showing there size. Any ideas about them?

The coin is hardly worn meaning it wasn't in the surf very long. Also, look at the half hole near the edge. It was most likely an expanded hole for wearing on a chain. Gold being very soft, it was a poor choice for mounting it on a necklace that way.

It was most likely lost from a modern piece of jewelry. As for the square nails, you may have a good notion there. Probably from an older boat, as you suggest.

Great finds though! You have a sweet spot there for sure. If you go back, keep a good record of your finds and accurately map the area so you can see about repeating this.

Yes, it looks like it had a Ring Connected to it at one time.

Not sand washed for sure.

Nice finds.
If that GOLD SOLIDUS isn't a replica it could be worth some serious bux.

These finds look old and are really interesting. I'm sure western people have been there before the recognised time of discovery, possibly even the vikings.I would be worth contacting a museum and checking the items out. You could change history. What a fantastic find.Congratulations.
