That tag style looks like it is from the 50s.

Go Up Go Down

I saw in an article that Sear used the brand name Higgins since 1900. I don't know if that is accurate. I worked at a summer resort in the north woods of Wisconsin in 1970. My family had been going there for about 8 years, and this was the sumer I turned 17 and would probably be too old to ever go on a family vacation again. The resort was called Teds Sandy Beach Resort. We had a beer bar there which served of course, only beer. There was an older couple in their seventies that came in about 4 nights a week though, and they sat at the bar and got tipsy without ever ordering a beer. The couple just ordered Coke, and then the man would untwist the eye piece of a pair of "barnoculars", which was a binocular looking flask that held about 16 ounces of bourbon. It was funny, because one night I asked the man if I could take a look across the lake with his binoculars. As I held them up tp my eyes, the couple and Ted laughed their butts off knowing I wasn't going to see anything. Anyway, long story short. the man's name was J.C. Higgins, and he was the bicycle guy. He and his wife had a cabin at another lake near the resort, but they drove about 12 miles to come to Teds to enjoy some company. Mr. Higgins would ask me to put a  quarter in the jukebox, pick a couple tunes, and then sing along with them. After the songs had played, ole J.C. would hand me a $20 bill and say thanks. I sang for him just about every time they came over to the resort. With him being in his seventies in 1970, I find it hard to believe that the name was used by Sears in 1900, unless of course his dad started the company up back then.

The plate you found comes from the "newer" bikes that were made in the '60's. The old ones had a very detailed emblem that was riveted to the front bar. The one you found was simply glued to the bar with something like rubber cement. I had two J.C. Higgins bikes in my youth, both of which were stolen. It seemed to be a common occurrence back then.
