Theoretically speaking, the mass and shape is the answer to your question. The mass in this find is very low making a current induced in it very small. This in turn results in a very small eddy current in the metal and your detector may not find it even if you put the coil right on the ground. It may surprise you to know that your best chance of detecting it may actually be at a distance. The reason for that is the shape of it. The detection area away from your coil has a shape that can "see" that small field better when it can detect the entire chain rather than a small part of it.

Try this. Put it on a wooden table and see if your pinpointer can find it from 2 inches or more. See how your detector reacts to it on the table. Move the coil side to side increasing the distance with each pass. Let me know what happens.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Ok GD I'll try that. Makes a lot of sense. Actually, I should also try that with other jewelry like hollow 14kt gold earrings. I tried to test detect them using one of my wife's earrings and to my surprise none of the two MDs I have beeped on them. I have to do it in the actual field outside because inside the house the MD gets really crazy with all the electronics and pipes, etc. I'l let u know  Great

Very interesting bit of info that. I have heard that fine chains are not easily located at depth. I have never had a problem getting a signal from a nice gold chain...or have I? So now we have to sweep the area twice, once at normal coil height and then again at a bit of a distance. That's if you want to be really sure!

I was really lucky that I happened to see one end of the bracelet just showing off the hole's wall, otherwise it would had gone undetected. Also that I did not kill it with my knife  Violent.

Hi, if you have the tracker4 set on dicriminate it wont detect solid gold try testing with the function switch set on tone and the discriminate knob set about half way or 1 o-clock it should give a low tone with gold and nickels and most other coins will give a high tone.Foiled

That's what I do with the Tracker 4, but I now use the Pioneer 505.

Congrats on the gold chain, Cyberborikua.
Does anyone know how does the gold chain sound?  broken or solid sound?

Well as you may know gold produces a solid low tone. GD sugested that it all depends on the mass of the piece and even the distance of the swipping. It would be recommended to run tests on all of those pieces and learn the different tones. I have two BHs and each one produces a distinct low tone on gold. I'll conduct the test myself and let u guys know, but I think each machine brand may produce a variety of low tones for gold. What I do now is to dig all the low tones I get, even if I pull out a lot of the obnoxious pulltabs. As you seen in my post, it eventually pays off.
