Cyber, I didn't read the Wiki article but I agree it probably wouldn't be worth it and it is dangerous too if you don't know what you are doing. I smelt zinc all the time. It is one of my favorite foundry metals because it takes the mold well and rust resistant and is low melting. The rules are 1) don't get it too hot or it will burn and give off metal fume which is toxic to the lungs 2) never mix lead or aluminum with it or you will wind up with slush metal that you can't pour out of the pot. 3) wear breathing protection for metal fume. (Brass founders develop a lung disease called Ague because the melting temperature of brass is higher than the fume temperature of the zinc. It only takes 2 or 3 bad exposures to leave an imprint on your lungs in x-ray. Welding or brazing galvanized metal also gives the welder the Ague as well. Grind all the zinc off before you start to weld galvanized metal.

As for the pennies, I put them in my tumbler at the end of the season and tumble them for 48 hours in sand, water and soap. They come out as bright and shiny as they were when they were first minted. Be sure to have a hand full of solid copper pennys in with them when you tumble them. The copper rubs off and colors any bare zinc. I then use the pennies to pay tolls. 95 out of 100 are still good enough to work in the toll machine. Right now I have a half coffee can of pennies waiting for this treatment.

Thanks for the info and tips. As for the smelting there is no purpose for me to do so, let alone exposing my health for a few bucks. I will try the tumbler with sand and see what happens.  Wink

All my zinc pennies from finds or pocket change go in a jar and at the beginning of each month I donate the little buggers to the local animal shelter.
Just some food for thought. (or your local shelters animals) Smiley Smiley
