Go Up Go Down

This afternoon I was online checking out the Sunday garage sales in my area when I located this great estate sale announcing lots of antique items, including late 1800s toys. It was already 2:00 pm and this estate sale had began today Saturday at 9:00 am. Well by the time I got there it was about 2:30 and they had sold 98% of the old house's stuff  Violent. There was some stuff left placed in the kitchen and ready for storage, but the kind ladies in charge allowed me and my wife look through the leftover stuff. I looked through a bag filled with fashion jewelry and managed to get some old items, including a nice mid-60s or 70's souvenir set of pendant and earrings from the U.S. Capitol Historical Society and approved by them. Can't find any info online, but I noted that the word Capitol inside the case was misspelled and instead it reads Capital  Shocked . I might be wrong, but is this an unusual print error or is it that the historical society was called like that then?  Undecided Also, I wonder how this misspelling affect the value of the nice set.  Idea Any comments?

The Official name of the historical society is The United States Capitol Historical Society. Every time I tried to search for that name with Capital, it corrected me to Capitol. I'm almost certain it was an overseen error.  Wink

Thanks Barb! We also use capital to name the most important city (e.g., Washington, D.C. is our capital), but as said in the previous post by Mudflap, the U.S. Capitol is a building in Washington, D.C., our capital. But the historical society itself is about the U.S. Capitol building. See

Well, let's start by seeing if we can date it.   There have been some rather significant changes to the capitol over the years.  I'd start by comparing the view on the set to pictures of both sides of the capitol building taken at different times in the 20th century.

That's my first goal, to date it. Your idea is excellente! I found this site with a great video animation of the architectural changes to the building since its original construction:

It seems, and correct me if wrong, that the set probably depicts the 33 feet extension of the east portico that began construction in 1958. Not sure though.

Also found this picture from the 50s-60s:

Now, I bought this set from a estate sale of an old house with antiques dating from the late 1800s. The stuff left when I arrived was all 60s and 70s. The set's case style may offer another clue for it looks kind of old to me. The historical society began in 1962. I don't know how much time it took to build the portico extension, but it seems that it was already in place by 1962. So, late 60s or 70s?  Undecided

I'd look at the period from 1962 to 1970.   This was probably one of the first offerings of the society.   That would explain both the view (artist using old pictures) and the misspelling (people unclear whether the society's mission was the building or the city).
