Go Up Go Down

On a dull rainy Saturday, I gave my new ETI561 a first true field condition test run. The chip plastic electro installation box I used has a neat property to be water tide, the only holes are those for loudspeaker and  controls, so I wrapped it in a plastic bag, fixed by two rubber stripes, just to stay on a safe side, to keep my soldering iron cold. The slow rain was just persistent enough to keep the runners and supervisors off the public gym/fitness/running no-no park I hit for 2 hours.  On some 150m of path I dug about 50 shallow holes none was deeper than some 20 or 30 cm, so no deep time consuming targets I always get when using one of my PIs. Good. I was hoping to find some coins and modern date trash, but most of targets ware small iron particles from WWI shells and grenades, I guess just rusty enough to give a nice clear ?diamagnetic? signal on a BFO. The tiny ones are really difficult to spot being the same color as the dirt and works as really efficient time consumers. So I guess I?ll need an honest VLF with solid discrimination and depth assessment as a low end detector after all. Damn. None the less I found a spent Italian rifle round, an Italian rifle bullet (fired, some 20cm deep!!  )  apparently a military uniform metal button (hit by something) and I picked one of the larger grenade particles (looks like a brown stone; it?s an iron chunk) just for display (left others behind).

Have fun,

d.

the center piece, is the end of the bolt from a Russian mosin nagant rifle. that has a true story to tell. to break that knob off the end of the bolt would take some impressive force. the pattern of it puts it on an early 91/30 dragoon rifle. most likely made at the Sestroryetsk arsenal some time near 1900...great finds... If you want to know anything more about the part just ask. I'm sorta an expert on that rifle.

Yeah, as long as the electronics doesn't get soaking  Grin

Hmm, the inside of the "button" is a steel screw but the button itself is made of some cooper alloy (not steel or iron). The rear side is broken off, are you shure this is a part of the gun? Thought shape is remarkably similar.

regards,
d.

P.S. The electronics works on smoke. Ones the smoke escapes, the electronics stop working. Wink

well, it sure looks like it to me. the "screw" is the end of the firing pin. the depth of the firing pin strike is adjusted with that screw. notice the line etched in the end that lines up with the screw slot. that is to let you know the firing pin needs to be adjusted or has moved.
