Go Up Go Down

I found this item today in some fill dirt that was moved to fill in the foundation of a torn down house.  This dirt was from a field, but I am finding window glass and pottery in it, so I am thinking it was a home site.  A week ago I found a Civil War Infantry button in this dirt.  Today I found the item that is in the photo.  I think it's a cannonball or maybe grape shot.  It weighted 3lbs 9ozs.  It's also about 3 Inches in diameter.  I don't see any seams around it, but it's got some corrosion on it.  There is a dimple on it that I was wondering if it was a fuse spot, however, it could just be from corrosion.

I found it in IL.  There are no battlefields around this area, but there were our share of soldiers who undoubtedly brought things home.

Any thoughts?

Well that looks like a cannon ball to me and that dimple is an impact spot, Nice find, but I think you just might be near a battle field because that soil hasn't travelled too far, So I'd keep going if I were you,

Good Luck mate, AU

PS, how far down was it???

It wasn't that far down because the fill dirt just came.  So it was about 8" down.  I am not sure how deep the hole was that the fill dirt came from.  We also found a Native American Celt in that dirt.

Oh dear, So that means that they have dug up a Battle Site, That's good for you but its a bugger not knowing where the site is,  I bet that nearly blew your ears off.

Ok... a couple of things.
First assuming that your hand is about the same size as mine, that looks like about a 4.2 or 4.62 diameter ball which means either 9 pounder or a 12 pounder,  so cannonball, not grape shot.
Second, you don't need to have been near a battlefield for it to have been shot.   Your local militia unit would have have had to fire their field pieces occassionally as part of their drill.   While most militia units were infantry, some towns did have artillery units, and even towns with infantry units occassionaly had cannon, especially if they were on the frontier.   Where cannon existed, the folks tasked with using it  would have to drill with it.

Take it to someone to have it diffused.  If it's like ours it's full of gunpowder and still very capable of blowing up.

I watched the man who diffused ours light the gunpowder with a single match thrown on top of the pile.

it's amazing how it could be buried for so many years yet still be so deadly.

Re-reading your description "It weighted 3lbs 9ozs.  It's also about 3 Inches in diameter. "  It is most likely a 3 or 4 pounder smooth bore solid shot (meaning it doesn't have any gunpowder to explode---but have it checked out just in case).   The rest of what I wrote still applies though.

I'm pretty sure there is a rail road near by and the ball you are holding just may be a railroad ball bearing. It is the correct size and without seams.
These were in use for a hundred + years.  They slightly are different now.
