Hello folks,

In this case, I know what it is. What I'd like your help with is What & How was it used? I know it's a !800's Cooper & Nephews Chicago "Sheep Dip" watch fob.

Was this passed out by salesman? Or something "special" given to executives of the Co or what?

Didn't know where else to ask this one.

Any help is of course appreciated.

I would think that they were handed out by feed stores or attached to to product it's self as a marketing ploy.

I can do some checking on the web to make sure, but my first thought is homefire's probably right.   They're probably the 19th century equivalent of the "gimme" hats that you use to get at the feed store or some of the auto parts stores.

Being a watch fob made from what seems to be copper, wouldn't that be something "expensive" to be just "giving" away? I found research about the company being in England but nothing pertaining to this fob or its intended use.
Somehow, it ended up in buried ruins of what was once among things a stagecoach stop AND back in its original days, a huge sheep ranch until the cattle-sheep wars settled the issue.

OH yea! FYI, the sheep lost.

I'd tend to agree, but then the quality of the Cracker Jack prizes and the stuff in the cereal has gone way down from when we were kids, too...not to mention you don't have service stations giving was glassware with a fill-up anymore.   I suspect we'll find some strings attached to the deal when finally figure it out (like 1 fob per case and the fob doubles as a can opener type deal).

And remember how your Mom and your grandmother use to buy boxes of laundry detergent that a free dish in it or a free dish towel (depending upon the brand)?   People use to give away some pretty good premiums back in the day.

So back to the question at hand, is McIntosh's key fob some sort of premium or something else.   We know it's designed to market the sheep dip, but how?

Heck Seldom, you know just as well as I do that just because they put 'em in 100,000 bags of feed doesn't necessarily mean there's anywhere near 100,00 out there now (but then again, there might be ).
