I think we crossed messages between your posting the picture of the radiator valve and my helium balloon filler suggestion.  I think you're right on the radiator check valve idea.   (and as I understand from my elders they did make some noise when/if the steam vented).

Yeah, I posted that as an edit to my post...

I see many similar things, but nothing identical, and I'm sure the function was the same, but there were HUNDrES of variations...but the whole thing makes sense...

 It could be a tire valve stem cap from an old car.
