Detecting Can anyone help me identify the 2 rocks I have found.  They are heavy and black and have not been able to cut them. I will send a photo of them on next posting.  Can some tell me how to upload to this web site.  The stones I have look like metorites according to metorite descriptions.  GOD BLESS all.

Hi cerayc and welcome.  I'd like to see them. Sue

Looking forward to the photos - I find meteorites pretty darn cool and over the years have collected quite few. Try a hanging magnet test as a quick check. A good magnet will stick to most meteorites - even stoney varieties have enough iron to get a reaction. A strong magnet hung on a thread and moved towards the sample will either stick right to it or try to. Thats why the thread. You could just try to stick a magnet to it but the weaker iron content meteorites may not have enough iron to hold the magnet. The magnet on a thread will swing over and try to stick and you can see the reaction easier. Just a more sensitive test.

Ysually the outside has a  shiny coating or crusty finish, and most Iron meteorites will stick to a magnet, need a pic or 2.

Carbon based meteorites are not magnetic and are much more valuable. There are also a few rocks that have magnetic attributes that are not meteorites. I would like to find a few myself. I have found rocks in my past that looked like them possibly but never kept them. Knowing their value now, I would keep anything that resembles one.

Here is a site that may help identification
