DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFORMATION AS TO WHAT TYPE OF PADLOCK THIS IS?  IT IS KIND OF WEIRD LOOKING.  I FOUND IT IN AN OLD, PLOWED, FIELD THAT WAS A FAIRGROUNDS UNTIL 1910.  IT APPEARS THAT A FRONT SWIVEL COVER IS MISSING.

Based on the hook being on the top, I'd say its a smokehouse lock for a door. Perhaps you can find
a metal piece for the lock to fit in at the same site?

Based on the shape it looks like a "cast back" railroad lock..

All sorts of lock shapes have been manufactured over the years...I've found a few different types also.........sometimes the shape doesn't necessarily designate a certain usage or purpose of the lock.

I agree with some of the other posts it looks like a railroad lock to me. the railroad locks used here in new mexico have not changed much at all in the last 60 years. the locks were made so that the keys could be made in mass amounts, so that every railroad hand could unlock any lock on the tracks. most times they were for box cars or to lock the levers used to change tracks. might check with your local locksmith, most of them around here collect old locks and they might be able to give you a better idea or even show you some locks they have collected.
