OK you're right, we are all wrong. Stick to your sand stone idea but I will tell you this, there is no one that would even try to sharpen a piece of wood on sand stone.

Still Maintain it's a form of Basalt.    Basalt has been fashioned into tools for a long long time.

I agree with you Homie, it looks like ophitic balsalt to me too. Not good for sharpening metal as the feldspar interferes with getting a sharp edge. It's not coarse enough to sharpen wooden spears. And his theory about the edges of the grove not being worn is all wrong, just look at the photo.
Sorry wus, don't agree with you.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

I not the expert in geology. But I saw many of stones in the mountain rivers . May be it is meramorphic sandstone. Probably I am not right. It is necessary to cut this stone. And then it will be possible to tell precisely. But then I can not sell it .  It is possible to try measure of density. But at me method measuring of density this stone will involve a lot of water. And consequently we receive the large mistake in calculations .

I have made calculation of density of this sharpening stone. Its density 2,54.
It was necessary to cover this stone with bee wax and then to weigh it in water.

Wus47 you have made up your mind that it's sand stone and that it was used to sharpen swords so why do you ask us our opinion if you will not accept it? this thread is not leading to anything so I suggest the topic to be closed.
